New Video Details Long Term Care (LTC) Pharmacies’ Clinical Value to Seniors’ Care
Washington, DC – The Senior Care Pharmacy Coalition (SCPC) today released a new video to illustrate key clinical benefits LTC pharmacies provide to seniors as well as clinical, operational, and regulatory differences from retail and mail-order pharmacies.
“Long-term care (LTC) pharmacies differ substantially from retail or mail-order pharmacies, providing enhanced services and specialized packaging increasingly needed by America’s aging population. As demonstrated in the video, we offer unique clinical benefits to seniors residing in LTC facilities, assisted living communities and other congregate settings,” stated Alan G. Rosenbloom, President and CEO of SCPC, the only federal advocacy organization devoted exclusively to the interests of the nation’s LTC pharmacies and the patients they serve.
“LTC pharmacies face professional, operational and regulatory requirements different from other types of pharmacies,” he continued. “Explaining these differences, and why they matter when it comes to maintaining quality patient care and assuring effective public policy, is our top educational priority.”
SCPC is also working to define LTC pharmacy clearly in federal law. Currently, LTC pharmacies face an antiquated patchwork of vague and inconsistent regulations across multiple federal agencies, which often creates confusion and conflict to the detriment of patient care across LTC care settings.
According to Rosenbloom, “A statutory definition of LTC pharmacy is an important first step in assuring that federal policy affords the nation’s LTC patients the pharmacy care and services so vital to their quality of care and quality of life in an increasingly diverse array of settings.”
The new video will supplement the ongoing LTC pharmacy visit program hosted by SCPC to connect public officials with constituent pharmacies. The program aims to raise awareness among policymakers of the value and services provided to area seniors.
